(May 23, 2006) Broadway Under the Stars, the free outdoor concert that shines the spotlight on the Theater Capital of the World and its brightest talent, for the first time ever, will take the stage at the greatest outdoor venue in New York City – the Great Lawn in Central Park – on Monday, June 26, 2006 at 8:00 pm. Known as the kick-off of the city’s outdoor concert season, Broadway Under the Stars will be presented by Target and produced by the NYC & Company Foundation and The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc.
“We are thrilled to bring the magic of Broadway Under the Stars to Central Park’s Great Lawn for the first time. I encourage all New Yorkers and our visitors from around the world to come to the lawn and enjoy this incredible night of classic song and dance by Broadway’s brightest talent, making the enchantment of Broadway accessible to all who love the theatre,” said NYC & Company President and CEO Cristyne L. Nicholas. “We are delighted to partner with Target and The League of American Theatres and Producers to bring Broadway to one of New York City’s most beautiful outdoor spaces.”
“It is with great excitement that we are bringing Broadway Under the Stars, for the first time ever, to Central Park, making it possible for even more people to experience the magic of Broadway -- and in such a glorious setting,” commented Jed Bernstein, President of The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. “This year’s concert will be a grand celebration of the Great White Way, demonstrating once again why Broadway is an integral part of the New York City summer outdoor experience, and one of New York City’s most treasured assets.”
“Target is proud to present Broadway Under the Stars on the Central Park’s Great Lawn, and partner with the NYC & Company Foundation and The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. to ensure that this concert is something that everyone can enjoy,” said John Remington, vice president, marketing, Target. “This free outdoor performance is a wonderful opportunity for families, friends and visitors to come together and experience true artistic talent in a classic New York venue. It is events like these that have the power to bring people together and positively impact the community by inspiring young minds and enriching the culture in which they grow and thrive.”
The Great Lawn in Central Park is host to some of New York City’s most highly anticipated summer events, including public concerts by The New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera as well as one-of-a-kind special events such as the Simon and Garfunkel reunion (1981); Placido in the Park (1988) Garth Brooks (1997) and the Dave Matthews Band (2003).
"From Mozart to Dave Matthews, from Stravinsky to Simon & Garfunkel, the Great Lawn has become a public space synonymous with great live music," said NYC Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "We are thrilled to introduce yet another genre of musical entertainment - Broadway Theatre - to the Great Lawn, which was built when "I Get a Kick Out of You" from Anything Goes, and "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess were popular hits. We are grateful to NYC & Company, The League of American Theatres and Producers, and to Target for producing such an exciting event to be offered free to the public this summer."
