(New York, June 6, 2006) Broadway Under the Stars will kick-off the outdoor concert season with a free evening of all-star entertainment featuring songs from the productions of legendary director and producer Harold Prince. Produced by NYC & Company and The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. and presented by Target, the fifth annual Broadway Under the Stars will take place on Monday, June 26 at 8pm on the Great Lawn in Central Park. A fireworks finale will follow the performance. (Note: Public can enter the park from West 81st Street at Central Park West or E. 79th Street at Fifth Avenue.)
The recipient of 21 Tony Awards – the most ever by one person -- and a 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree, Mr. Prince directed the premiere productions of A Little Night Music, Cabaret, Evita, Follies, Pacific Overtures, Parade, Sweeney Todd, The Phantom of the Opera and the acclaimed revivals of Candide and Show Boat. His productions include Damn Yankees, The Pajama Game, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof.
This year, Broadway Under the Stars will be directed by Tony nominated director and choreographer Jeff Calhoun (Annie Get Your Gun, Big River, Grease!) and Choreographer Chase Brock (Assistant Choreographer for The Music Man, Wonderful Town). Music Director Phil Reno (The Drowsy Chaperone, The Producers) will once again lead the live orchestra.
“We are thrilled and proud to be presenting songs from the productions of the legendary director and producer Harold Prince at this year’s Broadway Under the Stars,” said The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. President Jed Bernstein. “It is more than fitting that such great songs should be presented in one of the greatest of all New York venues—the Great Lawn of Central Park.”
“The talent of Harold Prince has enthralled millions of theater goers almost continuously for six decades,” said Cristyne L. Nicholas, President and CEO of NYC & Company. “As Broadway celebrates a record-breaking year, the songbook of Harold Prince is a fitting way to showcase all that makes New York the Theater Capital of the World.”
